BANK OF ENGLISH

This dictionary has been compiled by referring to the Bank of English, a unique database of the English language with examples of over 350 million words enabling lexicographers to analyse how English is actually used today and how it is changing. This is the evidence on which the changes in the dictionary are based.

The Bank of English was set up to be a resource for language research and lexicography. It contains a very wide range of material from books, newspapers, radio, TV, magazines, letters, and talks reflecting the whole spectrum of English today. Its size and range make it an unequaled resource and it has purpose-built software for its analysis.

This ensures that the text accurately reflects English as it is used today in a way that is most helpful to the dictionary user as well as including the full range of rarer and historical words and meanings.

NFOREWORD

The English Dictionary & Thesaurus is a uniquely useful language reference book, combining as it does dictionary entries and thesaurus entries on the same page. This means that at one look-up you can find not only all the standard dictionary information – pronunciations, meaning, examples, etymologies, but also synonyms for the different meanings, and where applicable, antonyms as well.

The dictionary text includes over 105,000 references, and is a substantial work that provides extensive coverage of all aspects of today's English. It is up to date containing thousands of the most recent new words and terms to have entered the language, reflecting changes and developments in our society. Particular attention is given to the vocabulary of science, technology, and many other special interest subjects with entries based on the latest research and development.

Help is given with difficult or controversial points in the use of English. The dictionary definitions give clear guidance on many aspects of syntax and grammar, and contain thousands of examples of words in use. Particularly problematic words have notes after the main entry in the dictionary text showing the current view on their usage, especially in cases where this usage is changing.

The thesaurus section at the foot of the page provides lists of alternative words for some 16,000 entry words in the dictionary text, the most basic words of the language and therefore those for which an alternative expression is most likely to be needed. Antonyms are included where appropriate. The synonym lists are divided into numbered categories, each relating to the particular meaning of the word in the dictionary text, so that it is easy to identify the synonym that most closely relates to the context required. Italic labels in both the dictionary and the thesaurus text identify words which have a particular area of use; for example, words which are slang or literary, or which are restricted to a particular region of the world.

The book is easy to use, with clear typography, numbered meanings, and every dictionary item which needs a definition given as a main entry in its own right.
The English Dictionary & Thesaurus is thus the complete language reference book, providing the fullest, most up-to-date, and helpful range of information available.
