Early life stress (ELS) can cause cognitive and sleep disturbances in children that can persist into adulthood. Makino et al. used a mouse model of ELS to study underlying mechanisms. Adult male but not female mice that experienced ELS exhibited cognitive impairments and disrupted sleep patterns associated with dysregulated dopamine receptor expression in the anterior cingulate cortex. Pharmacological rebalancing of dopamine receptor signaling ameliorated cognitive function. Data from a cohort of young children, as depicted here, showed that ELS was correlated with attention deficits potentially as a consequence of poor sleep. These results suggest that sleep disturbance is a mediator of attention deficits after ELS, which may be ameliorated by restoration of dopamine signaling.
